Granduomo is located in the center of Catania, in the historic Palazzo Sant'Alfano (18th century), overlooking Piazza del Duomo and the Cathedral of Sant'Agata. It is located on the 2nd floor with a lift.

 

The original Cathedral dates back to the end of the year one thousand, but was rebuilt several times as a result of the various earthquakes that struck the city. The cathedral that we can appreciate today dates back to 1857, when the bell tower was built. It is the main place of worship of the city, just as the opposite Piazza del Duomo is the most important square in Catania.

 

On the square, in addition to Granduomo, Palazzo degli Elefanti (the town hall) and the Palazzo dei Chierici, connected by underground ways to the Cathedral. At the center we find "u Liotru", which is the symbol of the city: a statue of an elephant surmounted by an obelisk, made of lava stone and placed in the middle of a fountain.

 

Every year, from 3 to 5 August, the Festa di Sant'Agata is held in Piazza del Duomo, the main festival in the city of Catania that recalls the martyrdom of the Patron Saint. Approximately one million people flock to the city, demonstrating that it is one of the most important and heartfelt religious celebrations in Italy.
